Worship

Worship is one of our core values at KingsGate and we articulate this value by being a people who 'express a life of intimacy with God by worshipping him in spirit and in truth'.

What is Worship?

  • Worship is a Response

Worship is in some ways an act of obedience to the first part of the greatest commandment: 'Love the Lord with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind and with all your strength.' Mark 12:30 NIV

True worship is also something that goes beyond obedience – it is a response. We worship in response to the revelation of who God is and what he has done.

  • Worship is God-Centred

We were created to worship; everyone, whether or not they would describe themselves as religious, is a worshipper. People may worship their favourite football team, or material goods, or celebrity. We also see in the Bible that people, left to their own devices, manufactured their own gods to worship.

God is jealous for our worship. He is passionate about us placing him first and our worship being centred around him. Worship is not about us, it's about God. Our worship needs to be focused on the Father, centred around Jesus Christ, and led by the Holy Spirit.

  • Worship as a Lifestyle

God wants our whole lives to be an act of worship. It’s about living a God-honouring existence.

'So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: take your ordinary life; your sleeping, eating, going to work and walking around life, and place it before God as an offering.' Romans 12:1 MSG

  • Worship in our Gatherings

As a church, we also believe that there is a high value placed on gathered worship. When the people of God, in the presence of God, pour out the praises of God.

So when we gather, we spend time worshipping together and believe that music is a biblical model for gathered worship. We see examples of this in the Old and New Testament.

Ephesians 5:19 NLT says '...speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord.'

We believe our worship should be a passionate, whole-hearted response. During our worship times at KingsGate, you'll find people with their hands in the air as an expression of surrender, clapping their hands, shouting for joy, and maybe even dancing around!

  • Passion for the Presence of the Lord

Hebrews 10:19 NIV reminds us that ‘we have confidence to enter Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus’

We are welcomed into the very presence of God, not because of anything we have done or could do, but because of the finished, eternal work of Jesus on the cross. He bought for us free access into the Most Holy Place, a place previously reserved for a once a year visit by the High Priest.

We want to be a church who understand the value of the access that Jesus bought for us, and respond by living a life of intimacy with the Lord.

In John 4, Jesus encounters a woman at the well and says that a time is coming when people will worship in spirit and in truth, and that these are the kind of worshippers the Father seeks.

As we respond to who God is, to the finished work of Jesus and are filled with the Holy Spirit, we see that our Father is seeking us.

The Westminster Confession says, 'The chief end of man is to glorify God, and enjoy him forever.' Worship is our primary purpose; we will spend all of eternity glorifying God and enjoying His presence forever.
